Respecting trees is sustaining life. The association Arbres 28 et environnement, departmental branch of the national association Remarkable Trees, is committed to promoting trees.

From Saturday April 29 and until Sunday May 14, 2023, the association is offering an exhibition at the Saint-André collegiate church in Chartres, “Trees of life, the passionate defense of nature”.

Remarkable trees in Eure-et-Loir: four candidates under study for 2023

Michel Cohu, president of the association Arbres 28 et environnement says more about it: “Two photo exhibitions will be presented. A composed of many explanatory panels which present the main remarkable trees in France. It was exhibited in the orangery of the Senate in Paris. It’s the Remarkable Trees association, which lent it to us. »

The other photo exhibition will present the fourteen remarkable trees labeled in Eure-et-Loir, including the famous ginkgo biloba in the horticultural garden of Chartres or the alley of lime trees and the three plane trees in the park of the Château de Maintenon, which will be officially labeled, Wednesday, May 3.

To complete these presentations, photos of the works of two artists will be highlighted. Constance Fulda makes prints of tree bark, especially those of oak trees used in the reconstruction of the framework of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. Photos that are twelve meters high.

There will also be photos of works by artist Frans Krajcberg. Originally from Poland, he lived for a long time in Brazil. “Now deceased, this artist was one of the first whistleblowers on the fires in the Amazon rainforest. His works have the particularity of being made from burnt wood. »

Arbres 28 et environnement’s mission is to promote the role of trees in the environment of the department, in the countryside and in the cities. This involves highlighting remarkable trees by labeling them.
There are fourteen remarkable trees labeled in Eure-et-Loir.

The four Bois-Landry brothers

“Among which the famous big oak of Meaucé, which speaks to all Euréliens. He is 650 years old. We have the precise date of its planting in writings. We can also mention the four brothers oak, located in the Bois-Landry estate in Champrond-en-Gâtine, labeled in 2021, whose four trunks have grown side by side. It’s very curious, because when we measured each of the four trunks, we realized that they were each between 1.70 and 1.73 m in circumference. Each trunk grew evenly. »

To decide that a tree can receive the remarkable label, it is necessary to know its age, but it must also meet physical criteria, have a certain height, a certain circumference, a particular history and meet aesthetic and biological criteria.

As part of the exhibition presented at the collegiate church, the ginkgo biloba from the garden of horticulture de Chartres will be officially labeled, Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at 11 a.m., during a ceremony. Ihe lime trees and three plane trees, present in the Racine alley of the Château de Maintenon, will be labeled at 2:30 p.m. In Chartres, as in Maintenon, explanatory panels will be installed, which will allow you to discover the history of these trees. Also, on May 3, at 5:30 p.m., a conference will be given at the Chartres media library, on the theme “The forest is our future” by Gilles Van Peteghem. Free.
The tree bill of rights, launched in 2019 by the Remarkable Trees association, was signed by three municipalities in Eure-et-Loir: Senonches, Saint-Georges-sur-Eure and Le Boullay-Thierry. This declaration specifies that the tree must be respected as a living being. “The more municipalities sign this declaration of the rights of the tree, the more they will be protected”, underlines Michel Cohu.
