SAN DIEGO, Calif. – “Me at the Zoo.” That is the title of one of the most consistent videos of all time. The video to start all videos. The “big bang” of the world of online video sharing was a clip uploaded to YouTube 18 years ago. That zoo? The one in the heart of San Diego, the “most famous in the world.”
On April 23, 2005, YouTube founder Jawed Karim shared the 18-second raw clip of himself in front of the elephant enclosure at the San Diego Zoo. It was filmed by its co-founder Yakov Lapitsky.
“Alright, here we are in front of the elephants,” he casually shared to the camera. “The great thing about these guys is that they have really, really, really long trunks. And that’s great,” she said.
“And that’s pretty much all there is to say,” he closed.
And that was pretty much the beginning of the world’s largest video sharing platform. “Me at the Zoo” now has more than 263 million video views and 11 million comments. One made just a few days ago called the video “a classic.”
“It’s amazing to think that it was the first video ever uploaded to YouTube,” commented a YouTuber named Jr. Scientist. “Looking at it now, it’s fascinating to see how far YouTube has come and how it’s become a platform for people to share all kinds of content with the world,” he added.
Even from the San Diego Zoo YouTube channel, they commented that they were “honored that the first YouTube video was filmed here.”
A month after the first video clip was uploaded, while the platform was in beta mode, YouTube was already getting around 300,000 video views per day. By the end of the year, the platform was getting two million visits a day. Nowusers watch about a billion hours of video a day.
And that’s pretty much all there is to say.
