In December 2022, the Concayt announced in a statement that the Patria vaccine, which it carries out in collaboration with the Avi-Mex laboratorywas in the final stage of clinical development. Months later, in March of this year, it reported that it had completed the recruitment of volunteers for tests on humans.
According to National Council for Science and Technologythe first results of this final stage would be revealed in the first quarter of 2023. But there are still no data available from the research.
What happened to the Patria vaccine?
In January of this year, the director of Conacyt, María Elena Álvarez-Buylla announced that if the tests were successful, the Patria vaccine would be ready in December 2023 and that its application would allow savings of more than 800 percent in the purchase of medicines out of the country.
At that time it was also mentioned that the vaccine would serve as the first and second dose, an option that was discarded months later by the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, who maintained that it would serve as a booster vaccine.
After this, almost two years after the Mexican government promised the successful development of the Patria vaccine against Covid-19, there are no official reports detailing whether Mexicans will be inoculated with this product, despite the fact that Conacyt has highlighted that there are already more than 500 people vaccinated (in the testing phase).
Since 2022, the institution had highlighted that the Patria vaccine successfully passed preclinical and phase 1 and 2 clinical trials. In the preclinical phase, it provided safe and effective results in living beings.
For clinical phase 1, the ability of the drug to generate immunity in humans was demonstrated, while in clinical phase 2R it was concluded that the biological was capable of producing a protective response as reinforcement.
With the support of these advances, Conacyt began recruiting at least 4,000 volunteers, who would be under the protocol approved by the National Committee for Science, Technology and Innovation in Public Health (CNCTI-SP) and the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris).
At the same time, the Conacyt enabled the site to share the advances in the development of the Vaccina Patria. Until today the portal is still active but there is no new information on the results of the tests carried out on the volunteers who responded to the call from the Mexican government.
