Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has canceled election campaign events for the third day in a row after falling ill with what is believed to be a stomach infection.
Erdogan, who has led Turkey for 20 years, is seeking re-election to a third presidential term in the May 14 election. According to the plan, he was supposed to be present on Friday at the opening of a bridge in the city of Adana in the south of the country, but his plans have been changed, and the president will instead participate digitally.
The 69-year-old fell ill during a TV interview on Tuesday with what Health Minister Fahrettin Koca later said was a stomach infection. Election campaign work on Wednesday and Thursday was consequently cancelled.
He nevertheless unveiled a nuclear power plant via video link on Thursday, looking pale. It is expected to be an even election between Erdogan and the opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
