We all remember seeing a cartoon that marked us as a child. Either because of the colorful characters or because of the adventures they undertook in the different chapters. Some of these series have a deep meaning in terms of something sentimental, but there are five cartoons that you watched as a child that have a legend behind them.
One of the most remembered and loved animated series by all is Pokémon, its unique characters captivated children and adults. Currently the “Pokémon fever” makes its fans do the impossible to get any animation object. Even a small island made coins from this Japanese animation.
Who decided to make Pokemon coins?
In 2001 an island called Niue decided to make Pokémon coins. Yes, you heard right, but it’s not as simple as you think. It wasn’t just a commemorative coin or something like that. It was an adaptation to its local currency, since on one side a character from the series was seen and on the other is the face of Queen Elizabeth or the Niue shield.
The coins were made of silver and had commercial value, that is, they could be used to pay for things like any other coin. The funny thing is that they not only made Pokémon coins, in 2011 they produced Star Wars coins, seven years later they put Disney princess coins into circulation and two years ago they released coins from the famous Mandalorian series.
The idea of creating these coins was to boost tourism in the country, since it was thought that the coins would attract people from abroad and thus travel to the island in search of these relics.
Where is Niue located?
It is located northeast of New Zealand, between Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands. It is an area located in the South Pacific Ocean. Their local currency is the New Zealand dollar and as we mentioned before they have released some variations of their currency.
Its economy is strongly influenced by tourism, being an island it is more than obvious that it has beautiful beaches and views. That is why the government tries to promote tourism.
