British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak does not want to meet with US Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis. This is reported by The Times newspaper, citing sources in the British government.
Officially, the visit is a trade mission for the state of Florida, of which DeSantis is governor. However, it is clear that DeSantis’ trip is part of his election campaign to demonstrate his foreign policy skills, the newspaper writes.
Earlier, DeSantis made visits to Japan and South Korea, where he met with the prime ministers of the two countries. However, in the UK, he will meet with the Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and with the Minister of Business and Trade Cammy Badenoch.
According to Downing Street sources, the British authorities do not want DeSantis’ visit and meeting with Sunak to look like a show of support for the presidential candidate. However, the press service of the British Prime Minister claims that the meeting will not take place, because Sunak has already scheduled events in Scotland.
“It’s just a matter of logistics” a spokesman for Downing Street said.
Despite the fact that DeSantis did not officially announce his participation in the elections, the headquarters Donald Trump already considers him as the main rival in the Republican primaries.
“Ron DeSantis is a young man who, to put it mildly, does not do well with me, judging by the polls. I believe that if he decides to run for president, it will only bring harm and discord to the Republican Party.” – these are the words of Trump himself about the candidacy of DeSantis.
