DUOL – Ágnes Gyarmathy’s Munkácsy award-winning set has died

Ágnes Gyarmathy was the head teacher of the Theater and Film Institute from its foundation. “We will keep his profound humility and overriding love for the theater in our hearts forever,” the institute announced.

Ágnes Gyarmathy was born on August 9, 1941 in Budapest, her parents were painter Tihamér Gyarmathy and Éva Gobbi.

She began her career as an actress at the Pécs National Theater between 1960 and 1962. Between 1962 and 1966, he became a student at the College of Fine Arts in Poznań, and from then on he turned to set and costume design.

From 1966 until his death, he designed sets, costumes or both for more than 500 different theater performances.

He worked in all major Hungarian theaters, including the National Theater in Szeged, the Csokonai Theater in Debrecen, the Katona József Theater in Kecskemét, the Jókai Theater in Békéscsaba and the Budapest Operetta Theater.

He received numerous awards for his theater, television and film work, and in 1978 he was awarded the Munkácsy Award.

He taught since 1989, was a senior associate at the visual design department of the University of Fine Arts, Kaposvár University, until his death he was the head teacher of the Theater and Film Institute.
