Borussia Dortmund, the leaders in the German Football League, extended the contract of its captain, Marco Reus, for an additional year, until the summer of 2024, according to what the club announced.
The contract of the best player in Germany twice was due to expire at the end of the current season.
Reus has scored 161 goals with Dortmund since joining him in 2012, standing 16 goals short of the record set by Adi Preisler between 1946 and 1959.
The playmaker and winger with the yellow and black team won the German Cup twice, without succeeding in winning the “Bundesliga”, after he joined him in 2012 from Borussia Monchengladbach, months after Dortmund’s last title in the league.
The team is currently in first place, just a point away from Bayern Munich, with five stages to go.
“I am happy to extend my contract for another year,” he said in a statement. “I have always said that I would prefer not to play with another team in my career other than Dortmund.”
He continued, “We as a team, like all our fans, have one big goal in our mind that we all focus on, we want to be champions of Germany.”
Reus has spoken regularly of his desire to finish his career at Dortmund and will be 35 at the end of the contract.
Internationally, he played 48 matches with the German national team, scoring 15 goals, but he missed several major tournaments due to injury, including the 2014 World Cup.
He suffered an ankle injury last September that prevented him from participating in the 2022 World Cup, but he scored eight goals and seven assists in 26 games this season.
