“Togo Launches $25 Million Referral Hospital, Dogta-Lafiè, with Capacity for 200,000 Patients”

Togo has set up a referral hospital in Lomé, funded to the tune of $25 million. The hospital, baptized “Dogta-Lafiè”, has a capacity of 200,000 patients.

The President of the Republic of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, yesterday commissioned a referral hospital in Lomé. The hospital was baptized “Dogta-Lafiè” (“health hospital” in Moba and Nawda, two languages spoken in northern Togo). The construction work was carried out 100% by Togolese companies. They are funded to the tune of $25 million. The funds were mobilized by the National Social Security Fund of Togo in partnership with Togolese private investors.

Services and equipment

The reference hospital is made up of eight sanitary blocks. It is a block of medical and dental imaging, a block dedicated to medicine, an administrative block, a surgical block, a women-mothers-children block, a block logistics and a VIP block. The establishment also has 22 consultation rooms and 160 beds and places.

In addition, the Dogta-Lafiè hospital is equipped with a state-of-the-art imaging technical platform, six operating theaters, two of which are hyper sanitized according to international standards. It has a functional exploration unit, a modern multipurpose laboratory and a pharmacy, reports Anadolu Agency. The specialties currently available in this hospital are general medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, oncology and interventional cardiology. In addition, there is a biology and anatomopathology laboratory, a hospitalization service and an integrated pharmacy.

The hospital will serve 30-40% of the population

For its first year, the referral hospital has a capacity of 200,000 patients. This new health infrastructure will generate 500 direct jobs. “The Dogta-Lafiè hospital will serve 30 to 40% of the Togolese population, and will drain, because of its advantageous pricing and the quality of care expected there, a new population which previously did not address to our hospitals, said Ingrid Awadé, director of the National Social Security Fund of Togo. The hospital is open to people from the West African sub-region, she said.

The construction of this reference hospital was launched on May 15, 2019. It should improve the supply of hospital care in Togo thanks to quality health care and increase the level of the technical platform, explains Ingrid Awadé. The objective of the project was to limit medical evacuations and their corollaries in terms of exorbitant costs.
