Cuca leaves Corinthians after fan backlash due to past sexual abuse conviction

Trained Cuca left the command of Corinthians just a week after taking over the team and playing two games.

The decision was announced by the coach himself after Corinthians qualified for the round of 16 of the Brazilian Cup, beating Remo on penalties.

The club cited “the family’s request to resolve private matters”, something also mentioned by Cuca: “I’m leaving right now, but I didn’t want to. You wait a lifetime to be here. It’s my family’s request. ‘Father, come, we need it’. Tomorrow I’m at home, I’ll take care of you» – said Cuca.

Cuca was announced as a replacement for Fernando Lázaro last Thursday and made his debut on Sunday, in a 1-3 defeat against Goiás, in the second round of the Brasileirão.

However, the coach’s personal life ended up dominating the club’s current affairs, with Cuca being vetoed by the fans – Cuca was convicted of sexual abuse in 1989 in Switzerland, but always pleaded not guilty.

«The last three, four days have been very heavy for me. Nightmare. It was almost a massacre. There comes a time when, honestly… I’m going to be 60 years old, a person weighs what’s worth and what’s not worth it in life. Right now, I want to make my family count, the most important thing I have in the world. I didn’t expect the avalanche that happened here. They are things that passed a long time ago, resurfaced as if they had happened today. I was judged and punished by the internet and that has consequences», said Cuca.

In 1989, Cuca, then coach of Grêmio, and three players, were accused of sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl in Bern, Switzerland, which would have occurred two years earlier, in a hotel room of the team, when Grêmio made a internship in Europe. Cuca, who admitted the teenager’s presence in the room but denied any abuse, was tried in absentia and sentenced to 15 months in prison in Switzerland, but never served time as he was already in Brazil, and the country does not extradite citizens.

In 2021, the coach defended himself in an interview with his wife and daughters: “There was no abuse as they say. There was a conviction for a minor having entered the room. Simply this. There was no sexual abuse, attempted abuse or anything like that. (…) This 1987 episode needs to be explained. I had been at Grêmio for two or three weeks, I didn’t know anyone. I have never touched a woman improperly or inappropriately. I have a clear head and conscience.”

The subject came back to the fore now, when the coach took over Corinthians.
