SSE Airtricity, the first energy supplier to announce its commitment to forgo profits on electricity and gas, is giving back €8.6m to its customers, amounting to approximately €35 per household. The payout will benefit over 247,000 customers and will be automatically applied to their accounts from this week. The move is in line with the company’s focus on supporting its customers through the cost-of-living crisis, and Managing Director Nikki Flanders says the company has provided €25m in customer support to those unable to pay in the last year. Despite sharp falls in wholesale energy costs, only Pinergy has cut its electricity unit costs so far, with the unit price for electricity in Ireland almost double the European average. Gas prices in Ireland are also among the most expensive in Europe.
