74 are homeless and 9,261 are displaced after floods in southern Bahia

The Civil Defense, until this Wednesday (26), counted 74 homeless, 9,261 displaced and 9,348 others affected as a result of the direct effects of the floods caused by the rains in the south of Bahia.

The numbers correspond to occurrences recorded in 26 affected municipalities, five of which have declared an Emergency Situation (SE): Santa Cruz Cabrália, Ilhéus, Belmonte, Itapebi and Porto Seguro. The other municipalities affected are: Anagé, Canavieiras, Caraíbas, Caravelas, Eunápolis, Guaratinga, Ibirapuã, Itabela, Itabuna, Itagimirim, Itamaraju, Itanhém, Jucuruçu, Lajedão, Medeiros Neto, Mucuri, Nova Viçosa, Prado, Teixeira de Freitas, Vereda and Victory of the Conquest.

This Wednesday (26), the Superintendence of Protection and Civil Defense of Bahia (Sudec) sent two more trucks loaded with supplies of humanitarian kits to assist families in the municipalities of Santa Cruz Cabrália, Porto Seguro and Belmonte, including indigenous communities, affected by the heavy rains that hit some regions of the state in recent days.

In all, nine trucks have already been moved towards the south and extreme south of Bahia, totaling 34 tons of food, 10,000 liters of mineral water, around 1,500 mattresses and 1,500 blankets, in addition to 17,000 square meters of canvas to cover slopes.

Since the operation began, the Bahia Military Fire Brigade (CBMBA) has already delivered more than three thousand donations to people who were victims of the rain in the Santa Cruz Cabrália region. Among the items are basic baskets, mattresses, blankets and water bottles, as well as clothes and toys.

During this Wednesday (26) the military continued delivering supplies and performing pre-hospital care (APH). Firefighters are also delivering, which are being donated by the population. The objective of the institution is to minimize the damage caused by rain.

In an action involving several state agencies, families affected by the floods in Itapé, Arataca, Coaraci, Floresta Azul, Ibirapitanga and Igrapiúna received new appliances. The delivery of 781 pieces of equipment, including stoves and refrigerators, was completed this Wednesday (26), in partnership between the State Civil Defense Superintendence (Sudec), the Military Fire Brigade, the Social Assistance and Development Secretariat (Seades ) and local municipalities.

The head of Seades, Fabya Reis, highlighted that the objective is social protection and emergency assistance. “The actions aim at the defense of life and effective support from the state government for those who need it most, resulting from the integration of several bodies in this same purpose. We completed this important stage of support from the State Government to the municipalities, aiming at improving the structural conditions for the people”, she pointed out.

The Bahia Infrastructure Secretariat (Seinfra) recorded six incidents on Bahian highways due to the rains since the rain operation began, on April 21, 2023. Of these, two points are with half-lane traffic and four others have already been fully released . Below is a list of stretches of highways in Bahia and bridges that have half-lane and/or cleared traffic:

SECTIONS WITH HALF-TRACK TRAFFIC:

Discovery Coast
BA-283: Itabela – Guaratinga
1 – There was a break in the culvert on the BA-283, between Itabela and Guaratinga, during the rains in the early hours of last Friday (04/21). A hydraulic excavator is already on site and the team is waiting for better weather conditions to start work. The passage of vehicles remains signposted and on half lane.
BA-001: Belmonte – Santa Cruz Cabrália
2 – A manhole rupture on BA-001, between Belmonte and Santa Cruz Cabrália, also caused the formation of a crater. The stretch is signposted and traffic is on half lane. The equipment is being mobilized. An inspection was carried out and the team is waiting for the water level to drop before starting the services.

SECTIONS WITH FREE TRAFFIC:

South coast
BR-415: Ilhéus – District of Banco da Vitória
3 – Trees fell at three different points along the BR-415, between Ilhéus and the district of Banco da Vitória, in the early hours of last Friday (04/21) due to the rains on the south coast of Bahia. The company responsible for maintaining the highway carried out the removal of trees from the lane. Vehicle traffic on the stretch is normal.

BA-262: Ilhéus – Uruçuca
4 – A tree fell last Friday (21/04) on the BA-262, between Ilhéus and Uruçuca, due to the rains in the region. The track cleaning action has already been carried out and vehicle traffic has been released on site.

South coast
BA-651: Coaraci – Itapitanga
5 – Due to the heavy rains, water from the Três Braços River invaded the diversion implemented for the construction work on the bridge between Coaraci and Itapitanga, on the BA-651, causing the interruption of vehicle traffic on the site last Friday ( 04/21). The volume of water in the river has already decreased and access to the runway has not been reached. Traffic is now open.

Middle Southwest of Bahia
BA-262: Firmino Alves – Santa Cruz da Vitória
6 – There was a landslide at two points on the BA-262, between Firmino Alves and Santa Cruz da Vitória, last Friday (04/21) due to rains in the Middle Southwest of Bahia. The road cleaning actions in the Santa Cruz da Vitória region have already been carried out by the company responsible for maintaining the highway. The passage of vehicles is normal and the driver must be careful when traveling on the track.
