South Korean President Pledges to Use US Nuclear Weapons in Event of Attack from North Korea

South Korean President Yoon Sok-yeol said that Seoul would use the full power of the alliance with Washington, including US nuclear weapons, in the event of a nuclear attack from Pyongyang. He said this at a joint press conference with US President Joe Biden following the summit in Washington.

“The Republic of Korea and the United States have agreed to hold immediate high-level consultations in the event of a nuclear attack by North Korea, and pledged to respond quickly, overwhelmingly and decisively using the full power of the alliance, including US nuclear weapons,” the South Korean president said (quoted in South Korean agency “Ryonghap”).

Seoul and Washington also condemned Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs and called for an end to it. The development of weapons of mass destruction by the DPRK poses a serious security threat to the alliance of South Korea and the United States, says in a joint statement by the leaders of the two countries, posted on the website of the South Korean president.

“The U.S. is committed to making every effort to consult with the Republic of Korea (ROK) in the event of any possible use of nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula in accordance with the declarative policy of the U.S. Nuclear Posture Report, and the ROK-U.S. alliance will maintain a robust communications infrastructure to facilitate such consultations,” says in the Washington Declaration.

The US stationed tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea in 1958 but removed them after the end of the Cold War in 1991. The Biden administration has no plans to redeploy nuclear weapons to the Korean Peninsula, The Wall Street Journal reported earlier.
