Trae Young led a late Hawks comeback punctuated by an icy goal to stay alive in the playoffs against the Celtics, which sparked NBA Twitter.
With 6:10 remaining in the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Round 1 of the 2023 NBA playoffs, Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown hit a 3-point attempt to give his team a 109-96 lead over the Atlanta Hawks. With a 3-1 lead over the Celtics, Boston already seemed to be packing its bags for the second-round series against the 76ers. Trae Young, however, had other plans.
From then on, Young led a ferocious Hawks charge back into the game, going 20-6 to take a one-point lead after the Atlanta goaltender had two free throws.
When Derrick White answered with two free throws to put Boston back in front, it was obvious who the ball was going to come back to. And Trae Young made it count, pulling himself off the logo with the Hawks’ season hanging in the balance, and netting a 30-foot shot for the game-clinching goal that staved off elimination.
Understandably, Young’s heroism has the NBA in turmoil on Twitter.
Young’s goal earned the superstar guard the final 11 points of Atlanta’s victory and capped a monstrous game: he finished with 38 points, 13 assists, four boards and five 3-pointers. He also scored 30 points in each of the Hawks’ last three playoff games.
Of course, to keep fighting playoff elimination, Young and the Hawks still have a tough job to do as they still need two wins to advance to the next round. But if the Atlanta star continues to play like that, especially in the decisive moments, it’s hard to knock them out right away.
