Shea Reynolds, a 29-year-old alleged chief of the New IRA, is currently in custody on charges of directing terrorism. Despite objections from prosecutors, a judge has granted him compassionate bail to attend his son’s confirmation. The prosecution argued that even a few hours of release could pose a risk of further terrorist-related offences, but the defence countered that this was unrealistic. Reynolds is also accused of membership of a proscribed organisation and conspiracy to possess Semtex explosives and firearms with intent to endanger life. However, the judge ruled that any risks could be managed by imposing stricter conditions, including that Reynolds be accompanied at all times by two solicitors and sit in the first three rows of the church, between the two chaperones.
