Very heavy periods lasting longer than a week, bleeding between periods, pain in the pelvis or during intercourse, altered vaginal discharge and rectal discomfort are signs and symptoms that may indicate a uterine fibroids.
However, there are also cases in which this benign tumor, which appears as a result of the abnormal growth of the muscle and connective tissue of the uterus, has no clinical manifestations, being diagnosed by chance.
In the absence of a correct diagnosis and adequate treatment, this condition, quite common in women of childbearing age, can have a significant impact on the quality of life, because the fibroid can increase in size, causing complications, including anemia, due to massive bleeding .
Gynecological consultation periodically, supplemented with a transvaginal ultrasound, is very important for the early diagnosis of uterine fibroids and the establishment of a therapeutic plan. There are several treatment options, depending on the symptoms, location and size of this tumor. Thus, in some cases, the doctor can only recommend careful monitoring or drug treatment, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve the discomfort caused by the clinical manifestations.
However, there are also situations where surgical treatment is necessary due to severe symptoms. The operation can be classic, performed openly, through a large incision – myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids) or hysterectomy (complete resection of the uterus) -, but also minimally invasive (laparoscopic or robotic). Some uterine fibroids can also be resolved through an endovascular interventional radiology procedure called embolization.
In recent years, robotic surgery in gynecology it has also proven its effectiveness in the treatment of uterine fibroids. Thus, myomectomy and hysterectomy can now also be performed with the help of the robotic system, a state-of-the-art technology that overcomes all the limitations of laparoscopic surgery. The articulated arms of the surgical robot give the surgeon greater freedom of movement than the human hand, so that he can make very fine, safe and precise incisions, even in places that are difficult to reach by other methods.
Also, thanks to the high-performance video system with which the robot is equipped, the image is stable, three-dimensional and magnified up to 10 times, which is an additional advantage, thus allowing the surgeon to visualize the operative field much better.
At the SANADOR Clinical Hospital, patients with uterine fibroids who are indicated for surgical treatment have access to minimally invasive interventions, including robotics – performed with the help of the most advanced technology in robotic surgery – the da Vinci Xi robot. Thus, complex surgical procedures can be performed, with multiple advantages for patients: small incisions, reduced risk of complications, short hospitalization and quick recovery. In addition, the robotic technique ensures increased accuracy of the surgical act and a low rate of conversion to open surgery.
