The snow-white kangaroo that escaped near Ede at the beginning of February and could not be caught, has been killed by a car.
The body was found next to the A12, the regional animal ambulance confirms to NU.nl after reporting Broadcasting Gelderland. Pieces of bumper lay around the kangaroo. The animal may have been hit by a car a week ago and the driver did not report anything.
The first report about the kangaroo came in on February 7. That was also the first attempt to catch the exotic animal. The animal ambulance also tried in the following weeks with nets, carrots, apples and cages, but that did not work either.
In a last resort, cameras were placed at feeding places. If the kangaroo, Skippy, entered a cage, it could be closed remotely. Those attempts also failed.
Anesthesia was not an option
Shooting the animal with a tranquilizer dart was not an option. For this, animal ambulance employees had to be able to come within 10 meters of the animal, which turned out to be impossible.
“The animal is also not immediately anesthetized. The question is then where he would run to half anesthetized. Maybe he will become a danger to himself,” a spokesperson previously explained to NU.nl.
There were also volunteers looking for Skippy. Death hit them hard, writes Broadcasting Gelderland. For example, they almost caught the kangaroo last week, but catch cages were not on edge.
