“The first thing” that José Moreira did when he started teaching in higher education in 1999 was to join a union. He joined the National Union of Higher Education (Snesup) and soon became a union delegate at the University of Algarve, where he still teaches today. Moreira is 55 years old and holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela. In recent years, he has been on the board of the trade union organization, which he now directs, where around 6500 professors and researchers are registered.
