Tottenham players have offered to pay out of their own pockets for the tickets for fans who came to witness the humiliating 6-1 loss to Newcastle in the Premier League.
The squad announced the gesture on Tuesday, two days after they conceded five goals in the first 21 minutes of the match at St. James’ Park. The debacle cost Italian Cristian Stellini the position of interim coach, who was fired on Monday.
The footballers stated that they want to reimburse the cost of the tickets that the visiting fans paid.
“We know that this does not change what happened on Sunday,” they said in a statement released by the club.
“We will do everything we can to make up against Manchester United on Thursday night… Together, and only together, we can turn things around,” they added.
Tottenham reported that the refund process will be completed within 24 hours.
The players apologized for their performance.
“As a team we understand your frustration, your anger. We weren’t good enough,” they added. We know that words are insufficient in situations like this, but we know that a defeat like this hurts…
The defeat left Tottenham in fifth place and with slim chances of qualifying for the next edition of the Champions League.
Ryan Mason, a former player for the London club, will lead them on an interim basis, just as he did in 2021 after the departure of José Mourinho.
Tottenham president Daniel Levy will have to focus on hiring a fifth permanent manager in four years.
