The world of Stark Trek is getting another film via Paramount+ – more specifically, a film event in the form of “Star Trek: Section 31”. This will revolve around a familiar face from Star Trek: Discovery, namely Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Philippa Georgiou. This character has had a tumultuous history on the show and now fills some fans with skepticism as the linchpin of a film.
What is Star Trek: Section 31 about?
As the title suggests, it’s about the CIA-like shadow organization of Starfleet – Section 31. This has already appeared in other Star Trek series such as Deep Space Nine. But what is the movie about?
“In ‘Star Trek: Section 31’, Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret branch of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and must confront the sins of her past.” it says in the description of Paramount+. Production on the film is set to begin later in 2023.
In the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, the crew of the Discovery landed in the mirror universe and directly in an attempted coup by the Terran Empire.

Michelle Yeoh herself also commented on the role of Georgiou:
“I am thrilled to be returning to my ‘Star Trek’ family and to the role I have loved for so long. ‘Section 31’ has been close to my heart since taking on the role of Philippa as this new golden age of ‘Star Trek’. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that has shown me the incredible power to never give up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what comes your way, and until then, live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”
Immediately after Yeoh left Star Trek, the actress wanted to develop a spin-off around Georgiou.
Not all viewers are happy
While many fans enjoyed the genocidal ruler from the mirror universe, there are others who do not wish for any more “Redemption Story” for this character – and also no Section 31 story. On Reddit say users among other things:
- “Section 31 is the worst thing that ever happened to Star Trek. It should never have ended up in a script, and I loathe New Trek’s obsession with S31.”
- “I think Michelle Yeoh is great… Her character, Emperor Georgiou, is terrible. She’s an evil, genocidal tyrant. Basically she is Space Hitler, without that being an exaggeration.“
- “Space Hitler: The Movie. What a horrible idea for a Star Trek movie. I love Yeoh, but her character in Disco is an unforgivable, genocidal monster that eats sentient beings. No thank you.”
- “A series that’s optimistic about the future of humanity, diplomacy and exploration of the universe has a small episode about a ‘dark government agency with questionable morals,’ and someone says, ‘Yes! That’s how I want Star Trek!”
- “Shall we cheer for this mass murderer again?”
- “Ah yes! I’m so glad they totally undermined everything the federation stood for – away with that ‘pure’ Trek that told us the future was bright, we got rid of the money and learned from our mistakes and that the Federation was there to bring peace to the galaxy.”
