A new subvariant of the novel coronavirus known as Arcturus has been detected in 31 countries. According to experts, this strain is highly contagious and can cause serious illness, but it is not considered to be more dangerous than the current variants in circulation. The World Health Organization has designated Arcturus as a “variant of interest”, but not a “variant of concern”. The best way to protect oneself is to get vaccinated, wear a face mask in crowded areas, and practice physical distancing when necessary. It is still beneficial to wear a mask in certain circumstances, and be more conscientious of one’s fellow community members by washing hands, getting vaccines and booster shots, and staying home from work or school even with minor symptoms. While Arcturus is spreading rapidly, it is unlikely to cause large outbreaks or overwhelm hospitals, and the currently available booster shots should provide good protection against the most severe disease.
