Hasna A., 31, who is suspected of having used a Yazidi woman as a slave in Syria, will be detained longer. The court ruled on Tuesday. It is not known how long A. will remain detained.
The Syrian gangster from Hengelo, who may have been a member of the Islamic State (IS), denies that there was any question of slavery. After her marriage, she was said to have been placed in a house with a friend of her ex-husband in the Syrian city of Raqqa. A Yazidi woman is said to have done housework there.
According to A.’s lawyer, the woman experienced a lot of misery in the Netherlands before she left for Syria “young and naive”. “The suspicion of slavery affects her a lot. She hopes that the suspicion will soon be dismissed.”
It is the first time that someone in the Netherlands has been tried for a crime committed against Yazidis, a religious and ethnic Kurdish minority. A.’s case is being heard in Rotterdam by the District Court of The Hague. This is the court that deals with international crimes.
The suspect from Hengelo is one of twelve women who were picked up by the Netherlands last year. They were taken from a prison camp in Syria to stand trial here. The women and their 28 children arrived in the Netherlands on 1 November.
The investigation will take months. The case may be substantively dealt with at the end of this year. The next introductory session is on 27 June.
