Zalando opens its virtual fitting room for all customers in all 25 markets. The pilot project is part of Zalando’s Size & Fit initiatives; as part of the pilot, customers can create a 3D avatar.
In the future, customers will be able to have their own avatar created at Zalando. The 3D model can then be used to check the fits of the different sizes. All users have to do is enter their height, weight and gender. This is currently only possible for a selected range of jeans (22 items from different brands).
The project is part of Zalando’s Size & Fit initiatives – “an important area of focus for the company.” For the first time, the online marketplace is now opening the pilot to all customers in all 25 markets.
Introduce virtual changing rooms on a large scale
A thermal image-style visualization with different color mappings shows customers where the garment fits tight or loose on the created avatar. When it comes to finding the right size, jeans are one of the most difficult product categories. Because there are no uniform size standards.
Zalando had already carried out two pilot campaigns with selected items from Puma and its own brand Anna Field. More than 30,000 customers tried out the innovative technology. The campaign content of each pilot project runs for several weeks.
“With the pilot campaigns, we want to understand how customers use the new technology. On this basis, we can develop a scalable solution for the future. We can already see that interest in the campaigns is growing: around half of the customers have more than one size on the avatar,” says Stacia Carr, VP Size and Fit at Zalando. “We want to support the fashion industry in adopting 3D design software and digital workflows for the production of clothing, resulting in 3D versions of the products. This is an important prerequisite for being able to implement a virtual fitting room on a large scale.”
