Japan is considering extending its unemployment insurance benefits to part-time workers who work less than 20 hours a week. This move aims to support families and provide more opportunities for job retraining. Currently, individuals with at least 20 work hours per week and expect to be employed for at least 31 days are eligible for Japan’s unemployment insurance program. These workers can access unemployment benefits, paid parental leave, and training and skill development benefits. By expanding access to part-time workers, Japan hopes to further strengthen its social safety net and promote career growth opportunities for all workers.
