A near-death experience is said to be a life-altering event, but new research has found that, contrary to popular belief, patients who have come back from the brink of death remain completely the same a year later.
Experts monitored 19 people after they had a near-death experience in the intensive care unit, and then followed up with them 12 months later.
Patients were admitted to the ICU for several reasons including respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and renal diseases.
Experts found that 15 percent of them had a near-death experience, and then these patients were studied further.
They were interviewed three to seven days after they were discharged from the hospital and asked about their experiences, showing that they had a greater tendency to have schizophrenic symptoms.
The researchers contacted them again one year later, and found that no significant association with quality of life was found, despite the fact that near-death experiences are typically reported as significant turning on and may be associated with negative emotions.
