Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam recorded a total of 12,700 cases of COVID-19 for seven days from April 16 to 22, the week with the highest number of infected since the beginning of 2023.

Since the start of the outbreak, the Indochinese country has confirmed 11,543,059 cases of COVID-19, of which 10,616,725 patients have recovered.

Currently the nation has 123 serious cases, of which 90 require oxygen through masks, eight receive high-flow oxygen with nasal cannula (HFNC), one patient is on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, and 24 patients are on invasive mechanical ventilation.

One death was reported in Hanoi on April 22, bringing the total number of deaths from COVID-19 in Vietnam to 43,187. To date, more than 266 million doses of anti-COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to the population.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Omicron variant is mainly circulating worldwide with some sub-variants such as BA.2.75, CH.1.1, BQ.1, XBB, XBB.1.16, XBB.1.9.1, XBB .1.5, XBF. So far, these strains have also been recorded in Vietnam.

Given the continuous increase in cases in recent times, the Ministry of Health recommends intensifying vaccination against COVID-19, prioritizing the protection of high-risk groups (elderly people, people with underlying diseases, people with weakened immune systems and women pregnant), who are at higher risk of serious complications and even death if they contract the disease./.
