The 49-year-old tycoon spoke at a private event at the English soccer club’s Stamford Bridge stadium on Thursday night, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be named. Boehly He did not elaborate on the mistakes at the event, which was touted as a chance to hear the American talk about his exciting plans for Chelsea next season, they said.
Among the attendees was Antonio Gutman, an investment banker at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., the people said. Goldman Sachs was one of the banks that worked on the acquisition of the Chelsea by Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital worth £4.25bn ($5.3bn) last year. Spokesmen for Chelsea and Goldman Sachs declined to comment and Boehly could not be reached for comment.

Boehly has had a disappointing start in English football. He has managed £500 million (almost $622 million) worth of player purchases with the intention of helping Chelsea compete for major trophies in England and Europe. But the club has struggled to score goals and would end the season trophyless and with little prospect of qualifying for European tournaments.
On Tuesday, Chelsea lost 2-0 to Real Madrid and exited the lucrative UEFA Champions League tournament. That came after a series of poor performances that have put the club in the bottom half of the Premier League. Boehly he has already sacked two managers – Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter – since taking over, adding to feelings of instability at the Chelsea.

While the fans have so far largely blamed the players and managers, there have been signs that this is changing. Boehly was seen debating with angry fans during the recent defeat of the Chelsea from 1-2 against Brighton & Hove Albion FC. Current and former players, including defender Thiago Silva, have also started calling for a clearer strategy.
The whole situation seems a far cry from the club’s successes under its previous owner, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who was forced to sell the Chelsea after Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022.
Thursday’s event at Stamford Bridge was originally scheduled to take place in the third quarter of 2022. It was postponed because it ended up coinciding with Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
