“Clean-up Responsibility Unclear for Former Home of ‘Cannibal of Rotenburg'”

After the fire in the former house of Armin Meiwes, who became known as the “cannibal of Rotenburg”, it is unclear who will be responsible for the clean-up work.

Meiwes himself did not have the money for it, nor was there fire protection insurance for the house, his lawyer Harald Ermel explained when asked by the German Press Agency.

Mayor: House became a “place of pilgrimage”

Meiwes has been in prison for more than 20 years for murder and disturbing the peace after killing, dismembering and eating parts of an internet acquaintance in 2001. After the crime, his dilapidated house in a district of Rotenburg an der Fulda became a place of pilgrimage for the curious and souvenir hunters. It is not known whether the 61-year-old wanted to sell it. Almost at night, people with flashlights haunted the property and took everything that wasn’t nailed down, said Mayor Sylvia Schellhase.

Already sighted the first onlookers

Although residents repeatedly called the police and the uninvited visitors pointed out that they were guilty of trespassing, most of them only shrugged their shoulders. After the fire, Schellhase and the other residents of the Atzelrode community of 164 are hoping for a little more peace. “You have to make it clear: folks, there’s nothing left to get here,” says Schellhase. However, it is unclear whether this will be the case. The first onlookers have already been sighted again at the property.
