“Modernizing Sugarcane Industry: Insights from German Corro Galo, President of Cañeros Produciendo por Mexico AC (CPM)”

Veracruz, Vera. April 21, 2023.- One of the main challenges faced by the sugarcane industry is the modernization and mechanization of the field so that producers achieve higher yields, according to German Corro Galo, president of Cañeros Produciendo por Mexico AC (CPM).

Interviewed during the regular session of the organization, the CPM leader explained that one of the main problems facing the sugarcane sector is the lack of fertilizers, as well as the modernization of the field, and that is that the pandemic generated by COVID generated delays in these items.

When asked about the challenges facing the field at the moment, he specified: “It is a very ambitious challenge, of transformation, the times that currently afflict us with climate change, the problem of drought, water stress in sugarcane, migration problems from people from the countryside to the cities, the problem of the pandemic that left us with a very difficult issue.”

The most serious problem in the sugarcane field is the lack of fertilizers -he added- the lack of soil analysis to know what soil we have, I believe that the challenge is to modernize the field and mechanize it, that is, what we occupy Right now, due to the migration of people, we have to mechanize the field and redesign the field, and we can do that only with modernization, the scientific and technical advances that exist for soil improvement and hybrid fertilization, using everything agroecological that we have available to re-nourish the soil.

Corro Galo took the opportunity to urge the general population to take care of the use of water, and it is that he pointed out that the scarcity of the vital liquid is a problem that is already experienced worldwide and of which Mexico is no exception, also affecting the fields sugar cane and therefore it is necessary to bet on sustainability.

“The sustainability of water management so that we make the sugarcane field a more profitable field with vertical production in a smaller area, but improving the soil, improving varieties and applying good water management with the current technology that exists.
I think it is an ambitious challenge but that we can meet it because we know about the subject”.

Finally, the leader of the association announced that during the session the Board of Directors of Cañeros Produciendo por México was renewed, being made up of: Ing. German Corro Galo, President; Ing. Refugio Polanco Sojo, Secretary and Ing. Luis Castro Flores, Treasurer.
