Military helicopters in a housing estate in the capital Bamako, Mali. This was confirmed by the authorities of the Malian armed forces.
“At approximately 1:10 p.m., an attack helicopter of the Malian armed forces, returning from an operational mission, crashed in a residential area of Bamako,” the General Staff of the Armed Forces said in a statement. AFPSaturday (22/4/2023).
The Malian Armed Forces said there was a suspicion of casualties. However, the exact amount is not yet known.
A military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the crash occurred in the Missabougou district. The police officer told AFP that the scene of the downed military helicopter has now been closed.
“The helicopter was returning from the Mauritanian border where it was intervening against jihadists,” another military source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP.
Mali’s military did not provide a detailed description of the operation, but local officials in the northern Malian city of Nara said the attack took place early Saturday.
“An Armed Forces of Mali supply mission was ambushed just 10 kilometers from Mourdiah on the road to Nara,” the provincial government said in a statement.
