Aid-el-Fitr: Working day in the shopping districts of the city center

In the lively neighborhoods of Antananarivo, yesterday, although a public holiday, looked like a usual Friday…pretty!

No respite for non-Muslim traders in the city center and elsewhere, as yesterday, a public holiday due to Aid-el-Fitr, was a day like any other, if not more, as customers were the appointment. Such was the case for the merchants of Analakely and Behoririka where the shops, apart from those run by Muslims, were well and truly open, while the stalls were as stocked as usual. “I take advantage of this holiday to do some shopping because during working days, I am held back by my work”, commented a young customer who, not being of the Muslim faith, was not affected by yesterday’s party but was quite happy to take advantage of the day off work and the opening of many stores.

Escapade

For others, no shopping at the market or in the shopping districts, but a getaway out of town to enjoy the long weekend. On all the exit axes of the city and on the national roads, in particular the RN1 and the RN7, the traffic was rather dense, to the great satisfaction of the merchants of seasonal products, artisanal products and others, along the national roads . The entertainment venues, especially those with swimming pools, were also quite busy. “It’s a great thing that Eid-el-Fitr falls on a weekday, and on a Friday to boot. At least we take advantage of it, like on other public holidays such as Easter Monday”. This month of April, the calendar shows three long weekends, the third of which is at the start of May. Indeed, after the three-day weekend at Easter and on the occasion of yesterday’s public holiday which follows the weekend, the next public holiday will be Monday 1is May, with yet another long weekend in prospect. It will be in a week.
