Coach Streich Anticipates Former Player’s Return as Keeper for Schalke 04

Freiburg (dpa) – With great anticipation, coach Christian Streich from SC Freiburg awaits his former player Alexander Schwolow. The goalkeeper of the relegation-threatened Bundesliga soccer club FC Schalke 04 was trained at the sports club and is in demand there again because of Ralf Fährmann’s absence on Sunday (3.30 p.m. / DAZN).

“I’m happy that he’s coming and that he can play,” said Streich on Friday about Schwolow, with whom he won the German A-Junior Cup in 2011. “We will greet each other and then we will cross swords.”

The goalkeeper, who was loaned out by Hertha BSC, was ousted from Schalke by the currently injured ferryman at the beginning of the second half of the season. Before moving from Freiburg to Berlin in 2020, the 30-year-old was a regular keeper at the sports club, which he joined at the age of 16.

“He got into trouble, where it wasn’t easy for him. When you have coach changes all the time, that doesn’t help calm you down, and he wasn’t used to the pressure,” Streich tried to explain why his former protégé in Berlin and Schalke could not prevail permanently. “He played really well with us, but it’s quiet here too, and he was very stable there,” said the SC coach, who fears that Schwolow will particularly motivate the return to Freiburg: “Schwolli wants to come along under all circumstances show us that he’s a really good goalkeeper.”
