Peruvian former president Toledo has reported to the US authorities to be extradited to Peru. In that country he is suspected of corruption and money laundering. According to the Peruvian prosecutor, the extradition will take place within two or three days.

Alejandro Toledo was president of Peru between 2001 and 2006. During that time he is said to have received about $ 20 million from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for a large contract. Toledo denies the allegations, insisting they are politically motivated.

The 77-year-old Toledo has lived in the United States for years and was arrested by the American police in 2019 at the request of Peru. He has been under house arrest ever since.

Permission

Earlier this year, the US State Department authorized Toledo’s extradition. His lawyers tried to have that reversed, but this week the latest attempt was also rejected. Toledo then reported to the courthouse in San Jose, California, yesterday.

Peruvian authorities have said that upon arrival in Peru, Toledo is likely to be transferred to a prison just outside the capital Lima. There are also two other former presidents, Pedro Castillo, who was deposed at the end of last year, and Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
