WhatsApp introduces “Keep in Chat” function, giving senders control over message permanence

The messaging platform enabled the “Keep in chat” function. It will be the sender who in the end will decide if the recipient keeps the message.

WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by Meta has introduced an important update, with which users who like to use temporary chats will be very happy. This is the “Keep in Chat” function that will allow you to save specific messages so that relevant data is not lost.

The new functionality is for situations where it is necessary to keep important information shared in a group or individual chat

However, this new option will not take away the power of the sender to be the owner of its content and it will be he who approves or not the possibility of the recipient saving the message.

For this feature to work, the sender will be notified when someone saves a message and have the ability to veto or approve the decision. If the sender decides that their message cannot be kept by others, the decision is final and the message will be deleted when the time expires.

The messages that have been saved in WhatsApp they will be noted with a bookmark icon and users can view these messages, organized by chat, in the Saved Messages folder.

Although initially talking about temporary chats, it is expected that this feature will be extended to individual and group chats.

How to stay in the chat

Temporary messages allow all information sent to a chat within a certain period of time to self-destruct. But the application found that some people wanted to save part of those chats, such as addresses or relevant information, which is why they created this new function that will work for all types of content, be it text, voice notes and media files.

To do this, simply press and hold the message for a few seconds and select the sticker icon to keep it.

Whoever sent the content will decide if it can be saved or otherwise, it will continue with its temporality so that it is destroyed according to the configured time, which can be 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days. With this, senders will have the last word on how the messages they send are protected.

“Today we present ‘Keep in Chat’ so that you can keep the text messages you need later, with a special superpower for the sender”, said the company when announcing this new modality. “We believe that if you have sent the message it is your decision if others in the chat can save it later,” he added.

As reported by WhatsApp, “if someone saves a message and the sender doesn’t want them to, they can ‘remove’ it for everyone, and that message will be deleted instantly. Once this is done, no one else will be able to keep that message either.”

In the case of groups, it will be the administrators who will be able to choose if everyone can keep a message or if that is only for administrators.

“Keep in Chat” will be rolling out globally gradually in the coming weeks.
