On April 20th, 2023, the South Pacific hosted a rare celestial event – a hybrid solar eclipse. This phenomenon occurs when a total solar eclipse transitions into a ring-shaped annular eclipse as the Moon’s shadow moves across the Earth’s surface. The eclipse was visible to skywatchers in Australia, East Timor, and Indonesia, and lasted for 62 seconds.
As reported by Space, the Sun should never be looked at directly, and specifically designed solar filters are the best way to view the closest star to Earth. Although the eclipse was only visible to people situated in certain locations, creative photographers utilized various objects, such as palm trees and colanders, to capture the crescent sun.
Astrophotographer and author Greg Redfern boarded a cruise ship to photograph the rare event. Over 2,000 people, mostly Australians, embarked on the cruise ship to locate a point in the Pacific where the unseen new moon would block the sun. Redfern explains how the Moon started to cover the sun at approximately 10:04 am and that it took almost 90 minutes to reach totality. He further expressed how the event was over too soon, “as it always happens, no matter how long totality lasts.”
The hybrid solar eclipse was a rare occurrence that left many people in awe of the celestial event. Only seven hybrid solar eclipses are forecasted for the current century, and the next one will occur in 2031.
