Petro proposed to Biden to lift sanctions “gradually” with the electoral schedule

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, proposed this Thursday to his US counterpart Joe Biden, to lift the sanctions against the government of Nicolás Maduro “gradually” with the fulfillment of an electoral schedule in Venezuela.

After their first meeting at the White House, the Colombian president proposed the construction of “two rails” that could promote negotiations between the government of Nicolás Maduro and the opposition.

“A strategy was raised on the table; that it is first to hold elections and then lift sanctions or gradually, that an electoral agenda is being fulfilled, the sanctions are gradually lifted”.

He added that he does not consider himself a mediator, but rather a sponsor, since the dialogue in Mexico City is “blocked.”
