the essentials in brief
- Last year, Red Bull was the first team to be fined because of the budget cap.
- In 2022, however, up to six teams could have exceeded the cost limit.
- At least Red Bull team boss Christian Horner warns of this.
Last year, Red Bull became the first team in Formula 1 history to be penalized for exceeding the budget. In 2021, the bulls had exceeded the new upper cost limit for the premier class. There was a hefty fine for that.
In addition to a fine in the millions, the team around world champion Max Verstappen also had its development budget cut. As a punishment, the Bulls have fewer wind tunnel runs and CFD hours available this season.
But if Red Bull team boss Christian Horner is right, there is a real threat of penalties in 2023. At the end of March, the ten Formula 1 teams had to present their final accounts for 2022 – and they could cause problems.
Six budget violations in Formula 1?
“For 2022 there is a risk that six teams have broken the upper limit,” Horner is quoted as saying on “PlanetF1″. “Energy prices have risen exponentially. Some teams have announced in the commission meetings that they are crossing the line.”
Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko blames high inflation for this. “According to the current status, six teams are over the border. Inflation was not foreseeable to this extent,” said the Austrian.

At Red Bull, however, they believe that, unlike last year, they are below the budget limit. “You can never be 100 percent sure. But 2021 was the first year of a very complex set of rules. We are confident that we will be within the limit in 2022.”
