Chitral:
Girls Ice Hockey Tournament was organized for the first time in Pakistan in “Parwak” of Tehsil Mastoj of Upper Chitral.
The tournament was organized to relieve the stress of the people confined to their homes as the valley is currently in the grip of severe winter and to provide employment opportunities to the locals and attract tourists.
The three-day ice hockey tournament was held on the ice surface at minus two degrees Celsius in which 11 matches were played in which students from various educational institutions of Chitral participated.
These views were expressed by the organizer of the event, Muhammad Asif, while speaking. The Express TribuneHe said that the idea behind this unique game is to promote children’s sports.

He added that he has been working on children’s, girls’ sports for two to three years at Bonny Environmental Academy, where students from class seven to class two are being taught skiing, skating and ice hockey among other sports.
Eleven players participated in the tournament and the matches were held at an altitude of over 7000 feet.
Asif also said that ice hockey is an expensive sport and the cost of the uniform alone is around Rs 50,000. However, he added, “They got a lot of support from groups supporting women’s sports and the district administration along with the local community.”
Yunus, another organizer who finalized the arrangements at the event ground, said The Express Tribunethat they had “a great experience. The students got a chance to play in practice after the training”.
He said that the children will practice here till February and said that ice hockey will not only promote such sports in the province but also the positive image of Pakistan will come out at the international level with the arrival of tourists.

A large number of visitors came to watch the game at a height of thousands of feet. The tournament was organized with the support of the Aga Khan Rural Support Program and the Canadian Embassy.
Officials of the Canadian High Commission attended the event as guests and appreciated the promotion of positive activities in the first women’s ice hockey tournament.
