Understanding Hypoxia: Symptoms, Causes, and Differences with Hypoxemia

Any condition that reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood or restricts blood flow can cause hypoxia.

Often people who have a history of lung disease or heart disease have a tendency to develop hypoxia later in life.

The names do sound similar because both involve a lack of oxygen but in different parts of the body.

Hypoxia is low oxygen levels in the body’s tissues, while hypoxemia is low oxygen levels in the blood.

Hypoxia is often caused by hypoxemia but does not always occur. Someone who experiences hypoxia does not necessarily experience hypoxemia or vice versa.
