Heidi’s Experience of Living in Saudi Arabia During Ramadan: Language, Culture, and Sense of Security

Al-Marsad newspaper: Heidi, an American residing in Saudi Arabia, recounted her experience of living the month of Ramadan in the Kingdom, and talked about the story of her love for the Najdi dialect.

Language and culture

Heidi said during an interview with Al-Arabiya TV: “I came to Saudi Arabia a year and a half ago, and my goal from a long time was to come to Saudi Arabia and learn a language and culture.

A sense of security

She indicated: “I certainly love America, but here in Saudi Arabia the situation is different. In America I do not know my neighbors, but here when I came to the new apartment, my neighbors came to me and brought gifts, and I sit with them and eat together. Here I feel safe everywhere in Saudi Arabia where I feel safe.”

Movies and TV shows

She added: “I learned dialects from soap operas and learned the new dialect, especially since my friends are from Najd, and from films and series from Jeddah I learned Hijazi. I love studying the difference between dialects, and I will learn all dialects.”

Bedouin form

And she explained: “I love my soul in a Bedouin way, I love Khaleeji songs, and I love Abdul Majeed Abdullah, Rabeh Saqr, Khaled Abdel Rahman, and Muhammad Abdo.”

Basbousa and Kabsa

And she continued: “The weather in Ramadan is sometimes strange. I like to walk in places in Riyadh, go to work, study at the university and go to the mosque to pray, eat and sleep, and my neighbor taught me to work with basbousah and of course make kabsa.
