A person has a wet dream when he or she involuntarily has an orgasm during his or her sleep due to a dream that may or may not be erotic. Research shows that on average 8 percent of dreams have a sexual content. In addition, both men and women report having an orgasm in about 4 percent of their erotic dreams. Wet dreams are not caused by masturbation during sleep. They arise without any manual stimulation.

When the man ejaculates, sperm will be released, a fluid that contains sperm cells. So whoever has such a dream can wake up with wet clothes or wet sheets. Hence the name ‘wet dream’. When a woman has an orgasm during her sleep, it is also referred to as a wet dream.

Not just in men

Many people associate wet dreams with men or even pubescent boys, but they also occur in women. When a woman has a wet dream, she produces extra vaginal discharge from arousal and eventually has an orgasm. It is true that men experience wet dreams more often, because they naturally have several erections per night.

Although adults can get wet dreams, they are most common during puberty. That is due to the hormonal changes that teens face. In adults, hormone levels are much more stable, making them less likely to have a wet dream.

Cause of wet dreams

Wet dreams occur during REM sleep. In this phase your heart beats faster, your breathing speeds up, the blood flow to your penis or vagina increases and you also dream the most. Those dreams can be of a sexual nature, but not necessarily. Sometimes wet dreams occur when you have been thinking about sex during the day or even when you have had no sexual thoughts at all.

How often someone has a wet dream depends on his or her hormonal production. Men who produce a lot of testosterone and women who produce a lot of estrogen are more likely to have wet dreams. How often a person masturbates or has sex can also affect the number of wet dreams.

Can you prevent a wet dream?

If you find it annoying or uncomfortable to have wet dreams, you can try not to sleep on your stomach. In that position, your genitals will be stimulated by your bedding. Masturbating or having sex before going to bed can also reduce the chance of having a wet dream.

You can also meditate before going to sleep or practice relaxation techniques. It can also help to talk to someone (professional) about your dreams.
