The consumer price index (CPI) recorded, year on year, an increase of 8.2% during the month of March 2023, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
This development is due to the increase in the index of food products by 16.1% and that of non-food products by 3%, explains the HCP in its recent note relating to the March 2023 CPI, adding that for non-food products, the variations range from an increase of 0.4% for “Health” to 6.2% for “Restaurants and hotels”.
Compared to February 2023, the CPI increased by 0.1%, the result of the increase of 0.3% in the index of food products and the decrease of 0.1% in the index of non-food products.
The increases in food products observed between February and March 2023 mainly concern “Fruit” with 3.4%, “Fish and seafood” with 2.2%, “Milk, cheese and eggs” and “Coffee, tea and cocoa” with 0.3%, “Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery” with 0.2% and “Vegetables” and “Bread and cereals” with 0.1%. On the other hand, prices fell by 0.8% for “Meat” and by 0.1% for “Oils and fats”.
For non-food products, the decline mainly concerned “Fuel” prices with 3.6%.
By city, the largest increases in the CPI were recorded in Guelmim with 1.4%, in Al-hoceima with 1.2%, in Beni-Mellal with 0.8%, in Marrakech with 0.7% , in Agadir, Fez, Tetouan and Laayoune with 0.3%, in Kenitra, Tangier and Settat with 0.2%. On the other hand, decreases were recorded in Casablanca and Errachidia with 0.3% and in Oujda, Rabat and Safi with 0.1%.
Under these conditions, the core inflation indicator, which excludes products at volatile prices and products at public prices, would have increased by 0.1% in March 2023 compared to February. 2023 and 8.1% compared to March 2022.
