Thomas Tuchel believes that Bayern Munich deserved more than a 1-1 draw in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Manchester City on Wednesday. The trainer praised the game of his team, but was less enthusiastic about the French referee Clément Turpin.
Tuchel was constantly commenting on the lead during the game at the Allianz Arena. The coach was even sent to the stands in the final phase. “Two things were bad: the field and the referee,” Tuchel said afterwards.
“I give the referee a big fail. Everything was bad tonight, from his first decision to his last,” said Tuchel. Bayern lost the first leg in England 3-0, as a result of which the club is eliminated from Europe. Tuchel felt that his team should have scored more in both matches.
“We managed to put pressure on the opponent at times, even more than in the first game. But just like last week, we were not lucky in the finish, so we didn’t take the lead. Otherwise we might have been able to turn around. But I am very satisfied with the way of playing.”
Erling Haaland put City 0-1 up in the second half by taking advantage of a slide from Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano. The Norwegian striker missed a penalty in the first half. Joshua Kimmich made it 1-1 just before time by using a penalty kick.

Guardiola praises City’s defence
City manager Pep Guardiola was very pleased with the way his team performed in Munich. “I know this stadium, I know how strong Bayern are at home and how much pressure they can put on,” said the former Bayern coach.
“Although we have been under pressure, we have not given away many chances. We defended well, especially in our own penalty area. We have made a lot of progress in that respect compared to last season.”
A setback for City was the injury to Nathan Aké, who was out with hamstring problems in the second half. “I’ve had this before,” said the defender. “It doesn’t look serious, but I can’t rule anything out. Tomorrow we’ll do some tests and then we’ll know more.”
City will face defending champion Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League, which was too strong for Chelsea over two matches. The other semi-final is between AC Milan and Internazionale.
