A disturbing incident has unfolded in Michigan, with reports stating that a man who had allegedly killed his parents went on to fire indiscriminately at motorists on a freeway. A shocking incident of mass murder, including the killer’s parents, in addition to firing on passing motorists on an interstate, was reported last week in Maine. The incident occurred just days after the perpetrator, Joseph Eaton, 34, was released from prison in Maine after serving a sentence for aggravated assault, a felony that barred him from possessing a firearm in the state. Police are yet to provide any possible motive for the killings, shootings and carnage carried out by Eaton on Tuesday, August 10th.
The shooting incident began in the town of Bowdoin where four people were killed, with three bodies discovered in a home and one in a barn, police said. Then, chaos developed where shots were fired at vehicles on I-295 more than 20 miles away in the community of Yarmouth, police added. Three people were fired upon, and one remained in a critical condition on Wednesday, according to reports.
The victims in Bowdoin were identified as Eaton’s parents, Cynthia Eaton, 62, and David Eaton, 66, along with their friends, homeowners Robert Eger, 72, and Patricia Eger, 62, police said. Police further confirmed that Eaton told them he was firing on cars because he thought he was being followed by police. Several vehicles were hit by gunfire. but the three people injured were a family all in the same car: Sean Halsey, 51, Justin Halsey, 29, and Paige Halsey, 25, the police said.
Eaton’s criminal history spanned the past decade and contained more than half a dozen crimes. State records indicate that Eaton had served an eight-month sentence last year for assault. The origins and ownership of the firearms used in the running shootings remained unclear, and state police declined to comment on the weapon used.
Speaking to reporters, Maine Department of Public Safety Commissioner Mike Sauschuck called the murders “an attack on the soul of our state” that shook law enforcement officers, neighbors and the state at large saying, “It’s a shock to everybody… you want to naturally say, ‘That can’t be happening here in Maine.’ But the reality is these senseless acts can and do happen everywhere.”
The seven people killed were the latest victims of mass shootings in the United States, including an earlier attack on a Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, and a Sweet Sixteen party in a small city in Alabama.
“This is an active investigation that has a lot of moving parts,” said Shannon Moss, state police spokesperson, on Wednesday. Eaton was charged with four counts of murder but was not immediately charged over the highway shootings, she said. He was jailed awaiting trial, and it is unclear if he has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
The shootings have left a grim reminder of the need for discussions on gun control in America, with several gun control advocates calling for tighter legislation. As of August 2021, the number of mass shootings in the United States, defined as a single incident in which at least four people, excluding the shooter, are hurt or killed, has reached 298, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
