Jakarta –
At this time the Earth rotates eastward so we see that the Sun and Moon rotate from that direction and set in the west. However, what if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction from now?
To estimate what might happen if the earth rotated in the opposite direction, Dr. Alfredo Carpineti on the IFL Science website created a thought experiment. He likens the Earth rotating to the west, where humans cannot stop and reverse it.
The biggest possibility that will happen if the Earth stops rotating is an apocalyptic tsunami, the oceans migrate to the poles, and the Earth lacks a magnetic field to deal with it.
But what are the other possibilities if the Earth rotates in the opposite direction?
5 Things That Happen If the Earth Rotates in the Opposite Direction:
1. The Sun Rises in the West
The first thing that will happen if the Earth rotates in the opposite direction is the Sun rising from the west. With the opposite movement of the Earth towards the Sun, the thing that will also change is the weather.
The prediction that many say that if the sun rises from the west it will cause great destruction was not justified by Bettina Inclan, who at that time served as NASA Associate Administrator for Communications.
“Reversing the magnetic field is indeed a real phenomenon that has happened several times in the past and scientists around the world are studying it, but the statement that this makes the Earth rotate in the opposite direction makes the sun rise from the west is wrong,” said Bettina, as quoted from detikInet.
2. Change of Wind Direction
Another phenomenon that will occur is that the Equatorial trade winds will no longer blow westward. This wind change will certainly have an impact on the diversity of biological species on earth. For example, equatorial trade winds carry nutrients from the Sahara into the Amazon and they help biodiversity there.
3. Changes in Ocean Currents
In addition to the wind, sea currents on the coast will also change. Quoting CNN Indonesia, this change in ocean currents will cause the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and important climate-regulating ocean currents in the Atlantic will fade and reappear in the northern Pacific Ocean.
With the changing sea currents in the Indian Ocean, it will cause cyanobacteria to no longer dominate the region as it does today.
4. No Desert
If the earth had moved differently than before, then deserts like the Sahara would most likely not have existed. Africa and the Middle East will be greener than they are today and vice versa, the United States, Caribbean, Central America, South Brazil and Argentina will become deserts.
Experts estimate that the global desert will shrink from 42 million square kilometers to 31 million square kilometers.
5. Planets are not all the same
All the planets in the solar system that orbit the Sun have the same rotation. The planets that will move in opposite directions are Venus and Uranus because currently the two planets are rotating in different directions.
Launching from the Malang Muhammadiyah University website, some researchers say that Venus only reverses its axis 180 degrees at several points. That is, Venus rotates in the same direction, only upside down.
The theory of Alexandre Correia and Jacques Laskar says that Venus did not move backwards from the start but that the planet only slowed down to a stop and then reversed direction.
