Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – The number of schoolchildren learning Russian in Saxony-Anhalt has fallen significantly in recent years. As can be seen from the state government’s response to a small question from state parliament member Hans-Thomas Tillschneider (AfD), a total of 10,876 children and young people were taught Russian in the 2022/23 school year. In the school year 2005/06, according to the State Statistical Office, this number was still 18,966.
There are currently 366 teachers in the country who teach Russian. According to the information, 180 teachers will leave in the next ten years. However, the Ministry of Education does not see a problem in this development. New teachers would also enter the state service, so that at least some replacements would be provided. At the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg, a teacher training course in Russian is offered.
