How Ryazanov Saved “Garage” – The Legendary Soviet Film’s Struggle with Censorship

The picture ended up in theaters thanks to Ryazanov’s compliance.

The tragicomedy “Garage” has long been considered a classic of Soviet cinema. More than one generation of viewers has been watching Eldar Ryazanov’s painting with interest, noting its relevance and topicality. However, initially the legendary film risked not being in theaters.

So, initially the picture received permission to shoot, but Ryazanov started having problems after the completion of the work. The fact is that members of the Politburo did not appreciate Garage at all. In their opinion, the film, which takes place in the USSR, shows too clearly a society in which bribes, blasphemy and privileges for the chosen people flourish. This could not have happened in the Soviet Union.

As a result, Ryazanov had to arrange reshoots. He replaced some of the sharpest expressions, after which the film was allowed to be released in theaters. But all the same, “Garage” was shown only on the periphery, so as not to draw too much attention to it.
