(CNN) A 65-year-old resident of the house opened fire on a car that strayed from a public road to a private house in a rural area of upstate New York on the 15th, and a woman (20) was shot and died.
The resident was arrested on suspicion of murder, the local sheriff said at a press conference on Wednesday.
A woman and three young men were in the car, and they were looking for a friend’s house.
One of the two shots fired by the resident from the front door hit the car.
The area is remote with dirt roads, and the women soon realized their mistake as they entered the driveway and were about to turn back. No one got out of the car, and it is said that no one acted to threaten the residents.
Cell phone signals were also weak, so after being shot, the group moved to a nearby town and made an emergency call. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police were called to the house, but the resident who opened fire barricaded himself in the house and was detained hours later with the help of state police special forces.
A page has been set up on the Internet fundraising site GoFundMe to solicit support for funeral expenses and other expenses for the bereaved woman’s family, and more than $40,000 (about 5.4 million yen) has been collected.
