“Tech Giants Push for Adoption of Expensive LED Screens in Cinema Chains”

According to industry sources, Samsung, LG and other technology companies are pushing cinema chains to adopt LED screens to replace the previous projection screens to improve the viewing experience, but at a higher cost.

It is reported that Hollywood executives have recently seen the technology demonstration of Samsung’s Onyx Cinema LED screen launched a few years ago; Samsung’s display technology has been applied to a small number of movie theaters, and if Hollywood accepts it, the scope of application may expand. This also means that screens are likely to replace projection screens in cinema halls.

The screens used in movies are actually the same as OLED home TVs, only larger in size, brighter than traditional curtains, and provide HDR support, and can also solve the problems caused by improper operation of projectors in movie theaters.

However, the cost of replacing it with a screen is quite high, and the placement of the speakers has to be reconsidered. Moreover, this type of screen is bulky and requires new rigging installation. When the movie is played, the rigging must also be considered because of the loud volume of the theater.

In addition, the power consumption and heat of the screen are additional concerns. In addition to the cost of installing an LED screen, it is also more expensive to operate than a projection screen, and additional cooling methods are also required.

The Digital Cinema Initiative has spent several years formulating technical specifications for direct-view cinemas including LED screens. It also released the latest version of digital cinema specifications last year in an effort to develop a unified digital transmission system.
