Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament for the Trinamool Congress party and the nephew of the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has been summoned by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning in relation to the alleged teacher recruitment scam. The summons comes just hours after the Supreme Court temporarily halted an investigation into Mr Banerjee over alleged corruption related to the teacher recruitment scandal. The CBI’s summons to Mr Banerjee is expected to exacerbate tensions between opposition parties and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party over claims that central agencies are being used to target opposition figures. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was recently questioned by the CBI as a witness in relation to an alleged corruption case concerning liquor policy. Opposition leaders wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month accusing his government of conducting politically motivated investigations using central agencies.
